A man fell asleep while driving last night on Interstate 78 westbound near the Interstate 81 convergence, according to a release by Pennsylvania State Police.

The crash occurred about 410 feet west of where State Route 72 crosses over the highway.

The 59 year old Reading man was traveling in the left lane when he fell asleep and traveled off the roadway onto the shoulder. The man’s 1996 Toyota Tacoma collided with a fence and traveled approximately 9 fence pots before coming to a final rest. If the man had not been wearing his seat belt, the outcome may have been different.

The man reported no injuries and the car was towed from the scene. The man will be charged with noncompliance of “driving on roadways laned for traffic.” The incident occurred around 11pm.
