Editor’s Note: In 2021, Michael and Nicole Borrell began reviewing Lebanon Valley’s restaurants and eating attractions as the Lebanon Valley Food Critics. Since then, the couple has aimed to offer unbiased reviews of the eating and drinking establishments the Lebanon Valley has to offer. LebTown is pleased to be partnering with LVFC to share these reviews with our readers. Bon appétit!

I posed the question to our followers and the response was overwhelming: Where can I find the best doughnut in the Lebanon Valley? Thank you to all who offered suggestions and responses.

We are going to run a mini-series, The Doughnut Wars, where we will attempt to find the best doughnut in the region. We will try a vast selection from each location and pick our top three. At the end, we will write a Lebanon Valley Top 5 Best Doughnut in the Valley list.

Our third stop on our journey is over to the west end of the Valley and a local favorite, The Filling Station.

Located on West Main Street in Palmyra, their always-busy doughnut counter serves from 5 a.m. until they run out. They offer a variety of doughnuts for takeout and for those that are in to grab a breakfast meal.

Today we ordered a half dozen with powdered creme, Boston, peanut butter cup, Oreo delight, apple cinnamon, glazed ring, and an apple fritter.

The half dozen doughnuts.

As the name implies, they fill their doughnuts with plenty of cream filling. In some instances, like with the Oreo delight, it was almost too much filling. But I would rather have that than not enough.

Our second item of note was that these solid hand-size doughnuts have weight to them. It must be from all the filling in them.

Today’s doughnuts were sampled by the LVFC crew with a nice cup of Honduras Copan brew from Cleona Coffee Roasters. Do you prefer coffee or milk with your doughnuts?

3: Apple Cinnamon – Sweet apple filling with nice chunks.

2: Oreo Delight – Crumbled sandwich cookie on top of a massively filled cream doughnut, hard to go wrong.

1: Apple Fritter – Accept their offer to grill it and enjoy it at the counter. Once you do, it will be hard to eat it any other way.

Honorable Mention: Peanut Butter Cup, Boston, Powdered Creme.
