Editor’s Note: Last year, Michael and Nicole Borrell began reviewing Lebanon Valley’s restaurants and eating attractions as the Lebanon Valley Food Critics. Since then, the couple has aimed to offer unbiased reviews of the eating and drinking establishments the Lebanon Valley has to offer. LebTown is pleased to be partnering with LVFC to share these reviews with our readers. Bon appétit!

This evening, the critic crew was able to get out and go out for a movie. And no, we didn’t go to see Barbie.

We timed our outing to coincide with a weekly Date Night special at the Allen Theatre & Backstage Cafe in downtown Annville. They offer dinner for two, two drinks, two movie tickets, and a medium popcorn for $35.

As a former Annville resident, the Allen is still the best place around here to watch a movie. Additionally, they have concerts and other special events in the theatre.

The Backstage Café offers a menu of panini sandwiches with movie-themed names, as well as wraps, salad, soup, pizza, and quesadilla. In addition, you can find a full coffee and specialty drink menu.

As for our meal tonight, we chose The Godfather (normally $9.50) and The Hollywood (normally $9.50). Each sandwich is served with a bag of Martin’s chips.

The Godfather is ham, salami, pepperoni, provolone, sweet peppers, and mayo on ciabatta. This is a simple sandwich on which this critic loved the sweet peppers the most. Plus the crunch of the pressed ciabatta makes this a nice lite dinner option with a rich savory flavor.

As for the Hollywood which comes with tomato, mozzarella, basil, and garlic sauce on ciabatta – We were glad they used a thick slice of tomato. The fresh basil came across as a subtle flavor which was an equal balance with the garlic sauce.

Our take: The Backstage Café offers a lite fare menu with a variety of sandwich options at a fair price. Plenty of options for both food and drink. They offer one thing unique, a game shelf for you to play while you wait. The Wednesday Date night special is a great deal for the couple looking for dinner/movie date. And they have some of the best popcorn around!

We give this place 🥓🥓🥓🥓.
