Update April 23, 2024: North Lebanon Township police announced Monday, April 22, that they have filed multiple charges against Brian Sheaffer, a 58-year-old Lebanon man, over the August death of 33-year-old Jonestown man Edward Matias-Rodriguez in a hit-and-run crash. Sheaffer has been charged with homicide by vehicle, accident involving injury/death, involuntary manslaughter, false reports, reckless driving, careless driving, driving on roadways laned for traffic, vehicle turning left, duty to give information and render aid, and immediate notice of accident to police department. Police said that Sheaffer fled the scene and reported his vehicle stolen. Sheaffer is expected to be arraigned today. Find our original report below.
The driver of a car that allegedly fled the scene of a fatal collision with a motorcycle last week has been identified by investigators.
The North Lebanon Township Police Department has released details regarding the fatal hit-and-run crash, which occurred on Friday evening, Aug. 25.
Around 6:38 p.m. Friday, the report said, a gray Toyota Camry was traveling west on East Lehman Street. The Toyota made a left turn heading south onto North 11th Avenue and into the path of a motorcycle traveling east on East Lehman Street. The vehicles collided.
The motorcyclist, identified by police as Edward Matias-Rodriguez, 33, of Jonestown, succumbed to injuries sustained in the collision and was pronounced dead on the scene.
The driver of the Toyota fled the scene in his vehicle. However, he was identified through follow-up investigations as Brian Sheaffer, the report from North Lebanon police said. The suspect’s vehicle has also been recovered.
As of earlier this week, the investigation is ongoing with the assistance of the Lebanon County Accident Reconstruction Team.
