The Lebanon County branch of the NAACP has announced its second annual Diversity Scholarship, which is awarded to a deserving senior attending public, private or cyber school in Lebanon County.

Due date for submissions is Friday, April 5.

Application information provided by Pat Steely, executive committee member and education committee chair for the local branch, noted that the $1,000 one-time, nonrenewable Diversity Scholarship is intended to assist with books and incidental expenses offered “to a deserving graduating Lebanon County senior of color (of African, Asian, Hispanic and/or Latino, Native American or mixed heritage) planning to enroll in college or a trade or vocational school in 2024, full-time or part-time (including culinary school, health care, auto repair, welding, animal care, technology, etc.).”

Although all students meeting the criteria listed on the application are welcome to apply, preference will be given to a student of color pursuing a major in education, Steely said in an email.

Jacqueline Woodson, the National Book Award winner of the memoir Brown Girl Dreaming, stated, “Diversity is about all of us and about us having to figure out how to walk through this world together.” Describe how you have responded to the challenges of diversity in your life. How do you hope to use your education to help marginalized people as you walk through this world in the future?

In addition to the essay and recommendation, a completed application signed by the applicant and a parent or guardian, must be received with a postmark no later than April 5 and addressed to Pat Steely, NAACP Education chair, 751 Airport Road, Palmyra PA 17078. Documents can also be scanned and emailed to ptsteely@verizon.net.

The NAACP or National Association for the Advancement of Colored People was established in 1909 and is America’s oldest and largest civil rights organization. Established in fall 2020, the Lebanon County branch gained official branch status in February 2021.
