A herd of 1,000 rubber ducks is preparing to stampede down the Quittapahilla Creek to do its part for domestic violence awareness.

Domestic Violence Intervention, a nonprofit organization, will host its fourth annual Rubber Duck Derby on Saturday, Sept. 28, to kick off Domestic Violence Awareness Month in October.

The derby is open to the public and will take place along the Quittie Creek between 7th and 8th streets in Lebanon, by the Lebanon Library and YMCA. The event runs from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., with the race starting promptly at noon. Free parking is available in the YMCA lot closest to the creek at 201 N. 7th St.

Anyone can support DVI’s services by adopting ducks for the race using this online link. The deadline for online adoptions is 5 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 26, although ducks can also be adopted in-person on the day of the race.

One thousand rubber ducks will be available for adoption this year, with price options including the Lone Duck (1 for $5), Quack Pack (5 for $20), Ducks in a Row (10 for $30), and Duckload (20 for $50).

Lebanon City Mayor Sherry Capello will return as master of ceremony, with special guest state Senator Chis Gebhard. Lebanon County Commissioner Jo Ellen Litz will judge the winners of the race.

The top three winners of the race will receive cash prizes, with the first place winner receiving $300, second place $200, and third place $100.

DVI executive director LeAnne Burchik noted that, besides the derby, the event will include a health fair and children’s activities. Anyone interested in sponsoring the derby this year should contact Burchik for more information at (717) 273-7154.

DVI’s mission is to unite and educate the Lebanon County community by advocating for justice and creating safety for victims and their families so they may live free from abuse. Free and confidential help is available 24/7 for individuals experiencing domestic violence by calling DVI’s hotline at (717) 273-7190.
