The Lebanon Valley Bicycle Coalition, in partnership with Lebanon Bicycle Recycle, invites the community to gather Wednesday, May 20, for an evening centered on remembrance, generosity, and safe cycling.
The event will be held at 106 Chautauqua Drive, Mount Gretna, behind Porch & Pantry, and will feature a community bike donation drive followed by the annual Ride of Silence, a globally recognized tribute to cyclists who have been injured or killed on public roadways.
The evening starts with a bike donation drive from 4 to 7 p.m. Volunteers from Lebanon Bicycle Recycle will be on site collecting used bicycles and bike parts.
Donations play a direct role in strengthening the local community, as the organization refurbishes bicycles and redistributes them at no cost.
At 6 p.m., participants will set out on the Ride of Silence, with riders encouraged to arrive by 5:45 p.m. to prepare. The ride will cover approximately 10 miles at a slow, steady pace and is open to riders of all ages and abilities.
Helmets are required, and participants are strongly encouraged to wear high-visibility clothing and use lights to enhance visibility. The ride will take place rain or shine, and no LVBC membership is required to participate.
The Ride of Silence traces its origins to 2003, when it was first organized in Dallas, Texas, after cyclist Larry Schwartz was struck and killed by a bus. What began as a local tribute quickly grew into an international movement, now observed in hundreds of cities worldwide. Each ride is conducted in near silence, symbolizing both remembrance and a powerful call for greater awareness and respect between motorists and cyclists.
Participants ride quietly to honor those lost, support those injured, and advocate for safer road conditions for all.
Lebanon Valley Bicycle Coalition and Lebanon Bicycle Recycle aim to foster a stronger sense of community while highlighting the importance of sharing the road responsibly. The evening serves as both a memorial and a message, the press says: that every cyclist’s life matters, and that collective awareness can help prevent future tragedies.
