Van Wirsing – Van Halen Tribute at The Allen Theatre
$27.48 | 7-9 p.m., Friday, May 29 | 36 E. Main St., Annville
Jump back, what’s that sound?
It’s Central PA’s newest tribute band… Van Wirsing!
Van Wirsing pays tribute to one of the most iconic hard rock bands of all time – Van Halen. Focusing on the “Diamond” Dave era of the band’s catalog, Van Wirsing brings together the amazing talents of five veteran Central PA musicians, each with decades of experience on the stage. Think of it as a local supergroup of sorts.
The name Van Wirsing is derived from the band’s virtuosic guitarist, Eric Wirsing (Solar Federation, Julie Schreiber Band), a lifelong fan and devout disciple of Eddie Van Halen. His love of the late guitarist’s mind-blowing ability as a technician and true innovator on the instrument continues to resonate with Eric to this day, long after he studied at Boston’s prestigious Berklee College of Music. A master shredder in his own right, Eric’s other superpower is his uncanny knack for mimicking any guitar part you put in front of him. Always fastidious about tone, Eric’s ability to dial in EVH’s signature guitar sounds is a skill that most guitarists simply do not possess.
The rhythm section of Mike Washkevich (Very Fine Gentlemen, Nowhere Quick) on bass and Ffej Herb (Solar Federation, Herbie) on drums lays down the relentless, high-energy groove for which Van Halen is known. In addition to his four-string duties, Mike also gets to display his vocal ability in performing the high harmonies of Michael Anthony that are a hallmark of the VH signature sound.
And if you’re a Central PA native and love classic rock radio, then Van Wirsing’s vocalist certainly needs no introduction. Glenn Hamilton – you may know him as the morning show host on 97.3 WRVV “The River” – is a true icon of FM radio. However, he’s also no stranger to the stage, having been a lifelong musician and singer. It’s always been a dream of his to perform the music of VH on stage, so Glenn brings a level of excitement to the stage as he sings the songs written by one of his favorite bands of all time.
Rounding out Van Wirsing is the incomparable Mike Bitts (Solar Federation, Innocence Mission) on keys and backing vocals. While Mike is most renowned for his bass playing, his undeniable talent on keys makes it possible for Van Wirsing to perform such enduring tracks as “And the Cradle Will Rock” and “Jump.” He also has perfect pitch, which comes in handy when covering all those intricate harmonies.
Despite its collective talent, the band’s origins are quite inconspicuous. Van Wirsing came together in the summer of 2025 to perform a 40-minute set of classic VH tunes at a legendary Central PA backyard bash. The band’s set resonated with everyone in attendance, and after video footage of the performance emerged on social media, there was hype, a lot of hype!
Bret Michaels (yes, that Bret Michaels) caught wind of the band and invited Van Wirsing to perform on stage with him at Spyglass Ridge Winery in PA. The performance brought down the house, and overnight Van Wirsing went from backyard band to a legitimate tribute to the music of VH.
Van Wirsing headlined the annual Rock the Food Bank benefit last December at XL Live in Harrisburg, PA, and the band’s first full show in February 2026 at West Shore Theatre in New Cumberland was sold out.
Sit down, Waldo… there’s a new tribute band in town!
Doors open at 6 p.m. The show starts at 7 p.m. All ages admitted, BYOB for guests ages 21 and older (no glass containers).

Book description: From the moment she entered the world, Francie Nolan needed to be made of stern stuff, for the often harsh life of Williamsburg, Brooklyn, demanded fortitude, precocity, and strength of spirit. Often scorned by neighbors for her family’s erratic and eccentric behavior — such as her father Johnny’s taste for alcohol and Aunt Sissy’s habit of marrying serially without the formality of divorce — no one, least of all Francie, could say that the Nolans’ life lacked drama. By turns overwhelming, sublime, heartbreaking, and uplifting, the Nolans’ daily experiences in this classic novel are tenderly threaded with family connectedness and raw with honesty.
Betty Smith has, in the pages of A Tree Grows in Brooklyn, captured the joys of humble Williamsburg life, from “junk day” on Saturdays, when the children of Francie’s neighborhood traded their weekly take for pennies, to the special excitement of holidays, bringing cause for celebration and revelry. Betty Smith has artfully caught this sense of exciting life in a poignant work of historical fiction, a novel of childhood replete with incredibly rich moments of universal experiences — a truly remarkable achievement for any writer.
This enduring portrait of a bygone Brooklyn is a story of survival, resilience, and the quiet moments that define a life.

Derrick Skye: American Mirror, Part 1
Derrick Skye’s American Mirror, Part 1 is a vibrant and thought-provoking work that reflects the composer’s ability to weave together musical traditions from around the world. Skye, a Los Angeles-based composer, conductor, and educator, is known for his innovative approach to composition, blending elements of Western classical music with influences from African, Middle Eastern, Indian, and Balkan musical traditions. American Mirror, Part 1 is a powerful example of his commitment to creating music that celebrates interconnectedness and shared humanity. The title, American Mirror, suggests a reflection of the nation’s complex identity, with its blend of cultures, histories, and perspectives. Skye’s music invites listeners to consider how these elements shape our collective experience and how they resonate in the present. Skye’s compositional style often involves layering different musical ideas, creating a sense of movement and evolution. In this piece, he draws on a wide range of influences, including:
Polyrhythms and Cross-Cultural Rhythmic Techniques: Skye’s use of complex rhythms, inspired by West African drumming and Indian tala systems, creates a dynamic and propulsive energy. These rhythms interact with more traditional Western harmonic structures, resulting in a compelling fusion of styles.
Melodic and Harmonic Diversity: The melodies often draw on modal scales and ornamentation techniques from Middle Eastern and Balkan traditions, adding a distinctive flavor to the work. Skye’s harmonic language is both lush and adventurous, blending consonance and dissonance in unexpected ways.
Innovative Instrumentation and Textures: Skye’s orchestration is imaginative and colorful, with an emphasis on timbral variety. He often incorporates extended techniques and unconventional combinations of instruments to create unique sonic landscapes.
The piece unfolds as a journey, with moments of intense energy giving way to passages of introspection and lyricism. Skye’s ability to seamlessly integrate diverse musical elements speaks to his vision of music as a universal language, capable of bridging cultural divides.
American Mirror, Part 1 is not only a celebration of diversity but also a call to embrace the connections that unite us, making it a powerful and timely addition to the chamber music repertoire.
Franz Joseph Haydn: String Quartet in C Major, Op. 54 No. 2
Haydn’s Op. 54 quartets remain a cornerstone of the chamber music repertoire, celebrated for their inventiveness and enduring appeal. The String Quartet in C Major, Op. 54 No. 2 is a perfect example of why Haydn is regarded as one of the greatest composers in Western music history, a true pioneer whose works continue to inspire and delight.
Franz Joseph Haydn, often referred to as the “Father of the String Quartet,” revolutionized the genre, elevating it from a simple form of entertainment to a sophisticated and expressive art form. Composed in 1788 as part of a set of three quartets (Op. 54), this work reflects Haydn’s maturity as a composer and his ability to balance structural clarity with bold experimentation.
By the time Haydn composed the Op. 54 quartets, he was at the height of his powers. Having spent decades as the Kapellmeister for the Esterházy court, Haydn had honed his craft in relative isolation, earning him the nickname “Papa Haydn” for his role in shaping the Classical style. The Op. 54 quartets were written for Johann Tost, a violinist in Haydn’s orchestra who later became a music dealer. These quartets, sometimes referred to as the “Tost Quartets,” were designed to showcase the virtuosity of the first violinist while maintaining the conversational interplay that defines the string quartet genre.
The quartet is composed of four movements, each offering a distinct character and mood:
Vivace (Lively)
The first movement opens with a bright and energetic theme, immediately establishing the quartet’s joyful and extroverted character. Haydn’s mastery of thematic development is on full display, as he weaves the opening material through a series of inventive variations and modulations. The movement is marked by its rhythmic vitality and playful exchanges between the instruments, creating a sense of spirited dialogue.
Adagio (Slow)
The second movement is the emotional heart of the quartet, offering a profound contrast to the exuberance of the first. Set in the unexpected key of A minor, the Adagio is deeply expressive, with a hauntingly beautiful melody in the first violin. The movement’s harmonic richness and poignant lyricism reveal Haydn’s ability to convey deep emotion within the Classical framework. The interplay between light and shadow creates a sense of introspection and longing.
Menuetto: Allegretto (Moderately fast)
The third movement is full of charm and elegance. Haydn’s characteristic wit shines through in the playful rhythmic shifts and unexpected accents. The contrasting Trio section provides a rustic, dance-like quality, evoking the spirit of folk music. This movement exemplifies Haydn’s ability to balance sophistication with accessibility.
Finale: Adagio – Presto (Slow – Very fast)
The finale begins with a slow, mysterious Adagio, creating an atmosphere of suspense and anticipation. This section is harmonically adventurous, with unexpected modulations and dramatic pauses. Suddenly, the music bursts into a lively Presto, a whirlwind of energy and excitement. The rapid tempo and virtuosic writing for the first violin bring the quartet to a thrilling and triumphant conclusion.
The String Quartet in C Major, Op. 54 No. 2 is a testament to Haydn’s genius and his ability to push the boundaries of the string quartet form. Its combination of elegance, humor, and emotional depth has made it a favorite among performers and audiences alike. The quartet’s innovative structure and dramatic contrasts foreshadow the later developments of Beethoven and other composers of the Romantic era.
The Telegraph Quartet, formed in 2013, is acclaimed for its dynamic interpretations of both standard and contemporary chamber music. Winners of the Walter W. Naumburg Chamber Music Award and the Fischoff Competition Grand Prize, the Quartet has performed at prestigious venues like Carnegie Hall, Lincoln Center, and Philharmonie de Paris, as well as major festivals across the U.S. and abroad.
A champion of 20th- and 21st-century repertoire, the Quartet has premiered works by composers such as John Harbison, Robert Sirota, and Osvaldo Golijov. Their recordings, including the 20th Century Vantage Points series on Azica Records, have earned critical acclaim from The New York Times and others.
Currently Quartet-in-Residence at the University of Michigan, the Telegraph Quartet is equally committed to education and community engagement, offering masterclasses, residencies, and innovative projects worldwide.
