The public can get a free, up-close look at the only population of eastern regal fritillary butterflies in the eastern United States during guided tours at Fort Indiantown Gap this summer.
The Pennsylvania Department of Military and Veterans Affairs’ wildlife staff will lead tours on June 29 and July 1, 8, and 10 on the base. Tours will be held rain or shine, with no rain dates.
Reservations are required and attendance is limited. All attendees, including children, must register online and obtain a free permit for a specific date and time slot.
“These tours afford the public an opportunity to see this rare butterfly and its home ecosystem on military training ranges, as well as the many other natural wonders on the 17,000-acre military installation,” said Robert Hepner, DMVA deputy for facilities and engineering.
Staff will also highlight other animals and plants found at Fort Indiantown Gap and explain how the military presence helps sustain the species and their ecosystems, Hepner said.
Attendees must drive their personal vehicles from a meeting location to the tour site, guided by Fort Indiantown Gap personnel. Meeting location and parking details will be provided after registration.
Each tour lasts about one hour plus driving time and includes a moderately difficult hike over gravel roads and mowed paths. Visitors of all ages and abilities are welcome.
Organizers advise attendees to bring drinking water and dress for the weather and uneven terrain. There is little or no shade on the tour route, and visitors must stay on the path at all times.
