Editor’s Note: In 2021, Michael and Nicole Borrell began reviewing Lebanon Valley’s restaurants and eating attractions as the Lebanon Valley Food Critics. Since then, the couple has aimed to offer unbiased reviews of the eating and drinking establishments the Lebanon Valley has to offer. LebTown is pleased to be partnering with LVFC to share these reviews with our readers. Bon appétit!

Welcome to what might be our most anticipated War to date, Lebanon Valley Diner Wars. Four entrants from across the Valley will compete to be declared the winner of Best Diner in The Valley.

Our judgement will be based upon several factors including menu offerings, quality of food, level of service, and ambience. Diners are a special place where you can get comfort food in a homey environment. For this War we will be having dinners at each diner.

We continue this War along the Route 422 corridor at the only one of our entrants that is open 24 hours. The Hearth Family Restaurant is a stand-alone diner with booth and table sitting as well as counter seating.

Our dinner for this evening was the special for the day, Bacon Wrapped Meatloaf over mashed potatoes and topped with onion rings and gravy ($14.95) with a tossed salad, and the Roast beef over filling ($14.50) with corn and tossed salad.

The meatloaf is a thick slice with smoked bacon wrapped around. The meatloaf has chunks of green pepper mixed in and had some cubed mozzarella as well. This dish came as a rather large portion, fitting for a diner patron’s appetite. This critic really enjoyed the large onion rings.

The roast beef came in slices piled on top of the potato filling. The gravy had a decent flavor, needing nothing extra added. The potato filling had a creamy flavor that was subtly sweet.

Did we just eat at the best diner in the Valley?

Next, we will travel to our final entrant: E & E Diner. After which, we will make our decision.
