As part of the America250PA Lebanon County celebrations, this presentation explores how the nation we know today was shaped by the vision and leadership of Benjamin Franklin. As the United States marks 250 years since its independence, Franklin stands out as a powerful symbol of unity, diplomacy, and enlightenment values. His efforts to bring the colonies together, his role in shaping the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution, and his success in securing French support during the Revolutionary War remind us how independence was achieved not only through military action but through negotiation, cooperation, and intellectual leadership. Through Franklin’s legacy, this presentation examines America 250 years later, reflecting on how thoughtful leadership, civic responsibility, and global engagement helped create the foundations of the United States and continue to shape its democracy today. Celebrate Independence Day with us at Heritage Park and Carter Parking Lot with a Red, White, & Brew Tailgating Party!
Bring your own food, grills, drinks, coolers, chairs, games, etc., and set up in the parking lot or in the Heritage Park area. Perhaps team up with other friends to share a “tailgate” spot and/or grill.
We will have grills fired up, music playing, and a fun time spent with our friends, family, and neighbors. Take some time to play shuffleboard, tetherball, cornhole, or some other game.
There will be a contest for the best decorated patriotic vehicle and the best patriotic personal costume! We highly encourage everyone to wear patriotic gear and apparel.
This event is hosted by the Campmeeting Activity Committee but is open to the Gretna area community.

‘What to The Slave is The Fourth of July?’ at Lebanon Expo Center, Brightbill Arena

On July 5, 1852, in Rochester, NY, the famed abolitionist Frederick Douglass delivered one of the most searingly brilliant speeches in American history. The speech highlights the yawning gap at the time between the nation’s foundational promise in the Declaration of Independence that “all men are created equal” and the harsh realities of racialized slavery for people of African descent living and toiling on American soil.
This community oration, free and open to the public, will offer an opportunity for the Lebanon County community to come together and reflect on our shared history and to steel our resolve to build a society in which the Declaration’s foundational promise and aspiration of genuine political equality for all people is realized in everyday practice. Forty-five community members will take turns orating sections of this roughly 90-minute speech, part of the America250PA Lebanon County celebration of the 250th anniversary of our nation’s founding.

Fifth Annual Sevco 3v3 JAMfest Basketball Tournament at South Sixth Street Playground

The South Sixth Street Playground Association is proud to announce the return of the fifth annual Joseph P. Sevco Jr. Basketball Program, scheduled for July 16-17. This community-focused two-day hoopfest features a free youth basketball camp followed by the high-energy 3v3 JAMfest tournament under the lights of the Sevco Basketball Courts.
The festivities begin on Thursday, July 16, with the first day of the Sevco Youth Basketball Camp running from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. The camp is open to boys and girls in 3rd through 8th grades. Registration is free and includes a complimentary t-shirt and daily lunches.
On Thursday, July 16, the evening transforms into the Sevco 3v3 JAMfest Tournament. Team check-in begins at 5:30 p.m., with games tipping off at 6 p.m. The event will feature multiple age brackets, free-throw competitions, a live DJ, and local food trucks.
The youth camp concludes with a second session on Friday, July 17, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
“These events continue the legacy of Joseph P. Sevco Jr. by providing a safe, positive environment for Lebanon’s youth to build skills and community,” said Sharon Zook, Playground Director.
Interested participants can register online via the South Sixth Street Playground Registration Portal. Spots are limited and typically fill quickly.
