Melissa Johnson of Bethel Township was among 11 individuals to earn diplomas from the Pennsylvania Municipal Government Academy, a program of the Pennsylvania State Association of Township Supervisors.

Johnson and her fellow graduates received their diplomas April 22 during PSATS’ Annual Educational Conference in Hershey.

The diploma program requires participants to earn 60 points across four categories — administration, planning and zoning, public safety, and public works — by attending workshops, webinars and other PSATS educational events. An additional 23 individuals completed a 30-point certificate program in a specific track.

“The Pennsylvania Municipal Government Academy gives township and other local government officials and staff a well-rounded education to perform their duties,” PSATS Executive Director David Sanko said.

Sanko said the academy emphasizes practical skills over abstract concepts.

“We wanted to make sure that students came out with useful strategies and techniques to help them do their jobs better and more efficiently,” he said.

PSATS represents Pennsylvania’s 1,453 second class townships, which serve nearly 6 million residents statewide.
